My Grandpa Leroy (my Mother's Stepdad) has struggled with emphysema for some time, and presently has pneumonia and lung cancer on top of that. He's in the hospital and has been moved to hospice care. I rarely talk about my Mother's side of the family because we are not very close, physically or emotionally. I have somewhat of a relationship with my uncle Mike, but most of my aunts live far away and their lives don't really seem to intersect very often. I'm used to it, and I don't think much about the disconnect or view it as strange. Every family has their own version of normalcy and this is ours.

Living in OKC has been an interesting awakening as far as family connection goes. Tim is part of a huge family and extended family who are all very much in each other's lives. Althugh I appreciate the independence that distance affords me from my family, I do wonder how our lives would be different if we were as tight knit as Tim's family. Maybe we'd be closer...or maybe they'd have more opportunities to drive me crazy. Who knows?

My immediate family has grown closer over time and rarely a week goes by that I don't speak to my mother, father, brother and both sisters. We don't always agree or see eye to eye, but we still attempt to find common ground and reach out to each other during good times and bad. This past week has been no exception. My mother is grieving over her father's impending death, and we are all trying to support her as best we can. We weren't all that close with our grandparents, but all the same, the life that is coming to an end is a great loss for all those who loved Grandpa Leroy. Our Grandma Millie has not been alone for many years and this new chapter of her life won't be easy.

This same month has been fraught with negative health news regarding family, extended family and dear friends. It seems that these moments lumped all together serve to remind us of our fallibility and the necessity of making the most of our relationships that we have. Your family may not always be around, but sharing time -- whether in person, over the phone, or even on webcam-- keeps us together. I'm not able to make it home for the holidays this year, so I'll be sharing some virtual Thanksgiving dinner with my family via Gmail video chat.

So, I guess the story here is; hug your kids, make a webcam appointment with your parents, and take advantage of the time you've got. Life is short...

Get out of my brain...

I've had numerous dreams lately that border on psychotic, but what is actually startling is the number of them that include convoluted plotlines about me trying to save Amy Winehouse from her drug addiction.

I don't know why this keeps appearing -- maybe I have some sort of mom/superwoman complex that I'm trying to work out, but seriously...Amy Winehouse needs help! Isn't there someone who can kidnap her and hypnotize her love of crack away? It's so desperately sad to see such a talented artist go down the tubes. Apparently my subconscious is even more upset about it than I am.

At any rate, my dreams where I try to save people are the most frequent type that I have, followed closely by instances where I have to be naked in front of a crowd or give birth to a litter of Alaskan dogs. These wacko pregnancy hormones are seriously strange. They could bottle that stuff and sell it at raves!

That's all for now...

Love Actually is driving me crazy...

Love Actually -- It is one of my all-time favorite Christmas movies. The one big problem with it, is that there is a porno subplot and some ill-advised nudity. This means I can't share this video with my parents (or Tim's parents) which is really a shame. It's such a terrific movie in every other respect.

Anyway, I have spent the last week trying to rip the movie from DVD, pull it into Adobe Premiere and edit it, and then burn it back onto a "viewable in DVD player" DVD. This has proved to be nearly impossible. I've spent a majority of this time wrestling with codec issues, and I finally was able to edit the file and export to a file type that I could burn onto DVD only to have some codec in the file repeatedly crash my window's explorer.

WHY isn't this movie available in the television edited version? I know they've shown it on TV sans nudity, but why can't I find it? I am seriously at my wits end with this project! But, at the same time, I've come so far, I just can't give up now...ARGH!

Oh, and please spare me the lectures on how this is all so unethical. The nudity subplot doesn't really phase me, but it would be cool to be able to share this film with a wider audience...The movie company really did themselves a disservice limiting the only available copies for sale as being rated R -- Christmas movies should be for everyone! Especially one so charming as this.

UPDATE: I got it to work! wooohooo! *does happy dance* I will now commence with sending the 'rents the appropriately boob-free version of this wonderful film. It was so nice to get out of the house and get some QT with these awesome ladies but also, I was super impressed with the crowd at this event. It looked like a Denver craft show. Wall to wall hipsters and punks and 'billies. It was refreshing! Where have they all been hiding, and did they all go to the polls? I must have been looking at our measly 34% of Obama voters. :)

I got my first onesie there. A cute little dog is printed on it and it says, "small but scrappy"! So darn cute. And I got a cool fascinator for my hair. I think I'll wear it for our holiday party.

Anyway, it was a wonderful evening and I just really liked getting out to see the OKC hipsters. It made me feel more at home... Oh and a shout out to Jennifer, Crystal, & Lydia! Thanks for putting up with my pregnant behind. (You'll need to wear pants to the polls) Get your ID and GO TO YOUR POLLING PLACE. You may have to wait in line. There will be lots of old people there. You could bring a sandwich, or a box of goldfish crackers. OR a comic book. But just remember that you're there to vote. YOU NEED TO VOTE.

Something like 48% of Americans don't even motivate to get to the polls. Don't be one of those people. Those people who never figured it out. Those people too busy playing Rock Band to read on the internet for 5 minutes about the issues. Those people too busy trying to get their kid to eat their peas. Those people who decided to spend their free time today taking an aromatherapy bath.

Maybe you don't love our candidates -- maybe you're having a hard time reconciling your choice with the menu items available. Well, guess what... You can't always get what you want. (Let's all sing together! But if you TRYYY sometimes... you just might get what you NEEEED!)

Think about the big picture. Think about gas prices and people filing for bankruptcy, think about the future of this nation. We can't take it for granted that everything will always work out for us. We have to take a stand and make our choices.
If the people who founded this country just STAYED HOME when the oppressors were telling them how to live their lives, where would we be?

So, get out and VOTE. You'll feel good, I'll feel good, and you'll know that you exercised this amazing privilege.

So do it! VOTE! Why are you still reading this??? I am so sorry we didn't get to video chat last night -- I would have loved to say hi to everyone. :(

Our party in OKC was a big success. The decorations looked awesome and everyone wore great costumes. We are really lucky to have some amazing friends here in OKC. I will say that as the night wore on, I found myself (as the only sober one) coralling the fringe of the party a bit. People depleted our liquor supply with starling rapidity, and we dragged out bottles of alcohol that remained from Denver...Finally someone drank that raspberry vodka! Anyway, it was really fun and I think everyone enjoyed our first OKC party.

Here are some pictures...

Do Over?

This week has been particularly difficult for both Tim and I. He is extremely overworked (and overbooked!) and the lack of spare time is hard on both of us. My work has been pretty relaxed, but due to all my baby induced nausea, I've been way behind in all my Halloween party preparations.

Most people probably don't realize how much work goes into these parties, but it's no last minute thrown-together shindig. There is so much coordination and preparation that goes into every little detail, it can be a bit of an undertaking. I mean, it's hard for me to pull it all off, when I'm at my best, let alone when I'm operating at 50%. All the same, it's coming together, and I have no doubt it will be a big success.

I am even more excited about the decorations since I received an unexpected but VERY generous gift from my D-Town peeps. My good friends Gillian & Joe got together and conspired to send me a some of my important decor elements that I left in storage back there (3 GIANT boxes full!). When the DHL guy showed up and I ran squealing on to the front porch, it was with disbelief! My wonderful friends knew that I could hardly throw this party without a few key items and I have to say, they really came through in a big way. Yay! (That rhymed...weird!)

Our costumes are very nearly finished and I plan to post pictures of them on Saturday, along with pics of the decor and party. I don't subscribe to the idea that John McCain will ruin the world. I don't deal in absolutes. I acknowledge that our candidates for office are flawed human beings.

What kind of person would take this position if not somewhat flawed? It's like admiring actors, but knowing that the only kind of people that want to be famous are people who NEED people. (Which contrary to a classic Streisand tune that would lead us to believe otherwise, are NOT the luckiest people in the world...)

People who want to be president are people who need something. They need power, they need recognition...People don't become politicians if their motives are purely to help mankind. It's a punishing career. It ages you, it exhausts you, and sometimes even kills you. It drags out all your flaws and skeletons and parades them for the world to see, it puts you on a pedestal that most of the world is desperate to see crumble.

So which flawed human being should we punish with that role? Who should we lay on the line for the world to criticize and to uphold whatever shred of dignity we still have as a country? Who can help us? Who can improve this broken health care system? Who can give us a reason to stop being embarrassed of our place in the world? Who can help us resolve this war that has dragged on for SO LONG? Who can guide us into a new era of energy conservation and exploration? Who can represent the best and brightest that we have to offer?

A tired old man, upholding tired old policies that don't work, accompanied by a self-described outsider who is an expert on nothing?

or

A forward thinking, vigorous man with a wife he treats as an equal, values that reflect the changing scope of America, a spirit that brings people together, and the willpower and brains to make choices that will help repair our country; accompanied by a politician who has extensive experience in foreign policy and national security?

I could have written about either candidate in negative or positive ways. I acknowledge that each one has both aspects to their policies. The number one thing that influences my choice though, is the thought towards the future. What kind of world will I hand my children? Who can we embrace as our leader, who will bring us together and encourage the transformation of this country?

I know who I'm voting for, and I believe he is going to win...

(Yes we can! Yes we can!)

Quoted from the NY Times

After last week’s debate, can you imagine Governor Palin meeting the Queen of England? “Great to meetcha.
